F&W regulator issue

Hi everyone and I’m a new member. Thanks for accepting me! I recently got a model 37 Flint and Walling mill that had already been disassembled. While all the parts are there, there is something about the tail frame and spring that don’t look right. Now forgive me if I don’t name the pieces right. I think the spring is too long. The tail price has to swing all the way till it almost hits the brake mechanism before it starts to get tension on it, plus the spring is always coming off due to no tension on it. Also the rod that you use to keep the fin ‘true’ with the mill is too long. Does anyone have a measurement of the spring or pic that I can use for reference?

I don't know a lot about F&W mills, but there are folks on here that do. I'm sure you'll get some feedback soon.

You might check the document library. There is a catalog that has some info on the 37.

Harristb, welcome to the site. First, what size wheel on your 37?
This will make a difference for parts. I have an 8ft. So may be able to help.
It would also help if you could post some pictures of what you have
so we can see what you are working with.

Not sure on spring length. I don't have the spring so maybe someone else can
reply. I have an 8ft on a tower, but not sure when I can get a length.

Not sure on spring length.

Mine is approx. 18.875" tip to tip overall length. The coil section alone is approx. 17.25".

Here is a pic of the 'mock-up' regulator spring bracket. After reading everyones post and help, it looks like it is correct. I guess I was under the assumption that the spring must have tension on it at all times

harristb, when the mill is open, the spring should be just tight enough
to take the slack out of it. If it is any tighter, it won't furl out in high winds.
Possibly causing damage to the mill.
