People either like wooden towers or they dont from what I have seen. Wood towers dont flex like steel towers. They do have more surface area than steel so they have more wind resistance. Anchors are bigger so the auger hole size for the anchors needs to be bigger. Wood towers are heavier so they are not as easy to swing mill & tower together to set at install. If you have a working windmill, wood towers are mot as easy to work in.

Our standard wood tower is patterned after the Aermotor 21' rancher widespread steel tower. Widespreads are more stable and easier to pull pipe in. A local sawmill provides full dimension rough sawn lumber with custom lengths up to 32'.

This is one of our standard towers set a few weeks ago in AZ. It would be considered a 23' tower. We do about 10 wood towers a year.

The above post didn't turn out like I intended. Sorry but you will need to open the MS Word document at the end.

Nice write up on the towers Larry.
I have a different process on building wooden towers but it
would take me a while to do a write up on it. Maybe some day.
When I build my next tower, I might try to do a write up with pictures on how
I build mine.

I ahve posted these pictures before. The windmill was on the farm in Oklahoma where I was born in 1945. I figure it was built for a wooden wheel and at a later date they stuck the Aermotor stub on top. The second picture taken about 1950 the one with my Mama pumping water maybe late 40's. I have a 602 with stub and hope to build a tower to look like this one and get it up soon. :D
